In preparation for their Wild Card playoff game against the Houston Texans on Saturday, the Los Angeles Chargers had to make a difficult roster move to make room for players who might be needed in the game. That led to the team moving on from 2023 fifth-round pick Jordan McFadden.
The Chargers eliminated McFadden’s roster position to make room for players coming off of injured reserve and the practice squad for the Texans game. That list included Simi Fehoko, Eli Apple, Jaret Patterson and Eddie Jackson.
The team may have had designs on bringing McFadden back to the practice squad but a player first has to clear waivers, and that didn’t happen. On Friday, the Chicago Bears grabbed McFadden off the waiver wire and added him to their roster.
In the end, McFadden, who was being considered for snaps at fullback during the preseason, played in just one game for the Chargers this season. He played in 12 games as a rookie and made two starts. The former Clemson product now heads to the Windy City, hoping he gets more of a look there.
The Chargers likely still had plans for McFadden in the future, but the numbers game of NFL roster-building sometimes creates these kinds of scenarios. The Chargers are in the midst of what could be a deep playoff run in year one under Jim Harbaugh and at least two of the four players mentioned above could likely suit up and play significant snaps against the Texans.
McFadden was relegated to the gameday inactive list in nearly every game this season.
