Michelle Manziel, the mother of former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel, has reportedly been charged with driving while intoxicated in Texas. According to a report from TMZ, the incident occurred on the night of Saturday, March 1, in Kerrville, Texas, the Manziel family’s hometown located outside of San Antonio.
The Kerrville Police Department arrested Michelle Manziel and processed her at a local facility. TMZ obtained and released a mugshot showing her looking directly into the camera at what appears to be a police station.
The report states that Michelle was being held on a $7,500 bail, though it appears the amount has since been paid and she has been released from custody. As of Sunday, March 2, the Kerrville Police Department had not responded to media inquiries regarding additional details surrounding the arrest.
The news comes amid Johnny Manziel’s continued openness about his own struggles with substance use and mental health. The former Texas A&M Heisman Trophy winner and Cleveland Browns quarterback has faced numerous controversies throughout his career, many of which were linked to his battles with addiction and depression.

In the 2023 Netflix documentary series Untold: Johnny Football, Manziel revealed that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He candidly discussed how his struggles intensified following a 2016 domestic violence accusation involving his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley.
Although the charges were later dropped in exchange for attending anger management classes and rehabilitation, Manziel admitted the incident played a significant role in his deepening substance abuse.
“The wires in my head seemed twisted,” Manziel said in the docuseries, explaining that after receiving his bipolar diagnosis, he began experiencing suicidal thoughts. He admitted to heavily using cocaine and oxycontin on a daily basis, which only worsened his situation.
In 2024, Manziel appeared on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, where he reflected on his darkest moments following his exit from the NFL after the 2015 season.
He described losing a significant amount of weight due to drug use and revealed that he had ignored repeated calls from NBA star LeBron James, who had been attempting to reach out and offer support.

“I was 210 pounds when I left Cleveland. I was 170 pounds sitting in Vegas that August, September, October,” Manziel said on the podcast. “How do you lose 40 pounds? You’re on a strict diet of blow.”
Manziel admitted that during that period, he was unable to fully grasp the severity of his situation. “At that point in time, man, I would look in a mirror and I didn’t see myself any different than when I was in Cleveland,” he said. “Until I stepped on a scale at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, I didn’t realize I had lost 40 pounds at all.”
While Manziel has since expressed a desire to move forward and work on his well-being, his family continues to navigate public scrutiny.
Michelle Manziel’s arrest is the latest event in a tumultuous chapter for the Manziel family, though further details surrounding her case remain limited at this time.
