The controversy involves cornerback Nick McCloud, who began the season as a starter after re-signing with the Giants on a one-year deal as a restricted free agent. Despite his role as a key contributor, the Giants reportedly pressured McCloud to take a pay cut early in the season. When McCloud resisted, tensions escalated.
According to Raanan, Schoen allegedly told McCloud’s representatives during negotiations:
“Don’t pay October’s rent, all right? As soon as I can replace him, I’m going to replace him. I’m not [expletive]-ing around.”
These remarks reportedly left a sour taste in the mouths of McCloud’s teammates, as the cornerback was well-liked within the locker room. Despite his contributions on the field, McCloud’s time with the Giants came to an abrupt end. He started four more games before being cut in early November.
