Goosebumps won’t be returning to Disney+ for Season 3. Instead, the show saw the axe after their ratings dramatically fell following the immense success of its first season
Disney’s Goosebumps is coming to a stumbling halt after only two seasons as another show is being picked back up.
The show, which returned in January, was based off R.L. Stine’s book series by the same name. Premiering in October 2023, the anthology series show replicated some of the 200 stories told by the fan-favorite author. Upon its debut, it saw massive success on the charts. However, Season 2 of the Disney show didn’t perform quite as well.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, viewers have watched 118 million hours of the show worldwide, 75 million of which came from United States markets, which are currently raving after a Comedy Central show. The first season starred Justin Long, Zack Morris, Isa Briones, Miles McKenna, Ana Yi Puig, Will Price and Rachael Harris. Season two starred David Schwimmer, Jayden Bartels, Sam McCarthy, Ana Ortiz, Elijah M. Cooper, Francesca Noel, and Galilea La Salvia.
“Goosebumps deserved more! The show had potential and a nostalgic fanbase sad to see it go this soon,” a fan on X, formerly known as Twitter, said. Another added, “First season was great. Second season wasnt executed well. A third season wouldve been nice but theyll probably find a way to reboot it soon.”
A third wrote, “Season 1 felt like a miniseries but they shouldve stuck to it. Not surprised though and even less shocking when in 7 years they try again with a movie or something. They have everything in the source material to make an actual anthology, way darker but still for teens.”
Fans blamed themselves for the show’s failure, noting they didn’t finish watching it or didn’t even know it was happening at all. “unfortunate this happened to a cool anthology series with some pretty great talent behind it all. this is my fault i never finished the second season, sorry folks,” said one.
Others blamed the studio’s marketing department, as one explained, “the way I didnt even know there was a new Goosebumps series. And I generally pay attention to s—, so you know marketing was really bad!”
Another fan online said, “Goosebumps got better in the second season they tried, but then they let go and everything went to s–t like a storm. Lol”
Season 1 primarily focused on a group of high schoolers who worked to solve a mystery about a dead teen. Season 2 moved onto fraternal twins who moved in with their botanist dad. It didn’t take long for strange, spooky things to start unfolding around them and, along with a group of friends, they set off to solve a mystery.
What Season 3’s exact premise would have been is not known due to the show’s cancellation. The Goosebumps literary legacy will live on, despite the setback from the show. After all, 400 million copies of the books are now in print… and that’s just the English versions.
